Academics are reluctant to admit that there are simple answers to questions put to them (assuming such simple answers do exist and assuming academics know what they are), because that makes them look non-experts. It tends to put them out of a job.
Or as Adam Smith put it, “People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public…”.
